Meet the owners of Fury Surf Shack: Marius Venter (L) and Letty Nowak (R).

When and why did you start Fury Surf Shack?
Fury Surf Shack was started in 2007.  It was started because we both love the industry and both of our parents have surf shops.   Some in South Africa and Michigan which is definitely a mix.

What is your favorite part of running Fury Surf Shack?
Staying connected with the lifestyle all the time.  We love the water and everything that you can do in it.  It is definitely our passion.

What’s the local scene like in Key West? Any spots worth mentioning?
Key West has amazing water!  It is great for an SUP because most of the time, the water is flat.  You can explore the mangroves and rivers all around the island.  The water is super clear so you can literally see fish from up on your board.  Some of the best waves for surfing are at Eastin Dry Rocks.

Tell us about the best places to eat nearby.
Coles Peace and the Cuban Coffee Queen

Fury has you covered with a great selection of longboard skateboards.

What are the best places to stay when visiting your area?

What’s the most exciting development in action sports in the past year–from your perspective?
GoPro cameras for sure!  Now we can see what it looks like in the barrel at Teahupo’o.

Which athletes do you follow?
Owen Wright and Kelly Slater.  They are two of the most amazing surfers to watch on tour.

Key West definitely has a "flip-flop" vibe to it and Fury has plenty to choose from.

Are there any upcoming competitions or events in Key West that people should know about?
Key West Paddleboard Classic which is at Smathers Beach on May 14th. This event has a 12 mile Elite Race and a 4 mile Open Race.  Plus it has divisions for all paddlers:  SUP, paddle boards, outriggers, and kayaks.

The other event is Letty Nowak’s Faces of Surfing Paintings.  The goal of this project is to paint 100 “faces” of the most influential people in the surfing community. The “faces” include people from all spectrum’s of the community, whether that be surfers, brand heads, personalities, philanthropist, etc.  This allows the project to be as diverse as the surfing community itself.

Art and Surfing, they seem to go hand in hand.  How did that come about?
I have a few loves in my life, but the top two are art and the surf industry.  Both impacted me at a young age.  I spent a lot of my childhood in my parent’s surf shops in Michigan and getting ready for school with my Dad putting surf movies on for us as we ate our morning cereal.  We were also taught to embrace art and explore it in every way possible.  It always sparked something inside me that made me want to look for more.  My degree in college ended up being in painting and graphic design.  I took this to Key West where I started my career as a professional artist.  Here I owned the Lemonade Stand Art Studio for several years and got my paintings into the market.  A few years later I was lucky enough to have the surf industry reemerge into my life as I was asked to take some ownership in the Fury Surf Shacks.  Now it seems the ball is rolling in both directions and what the future can hold between the two is pretty unbelievable.

Any new products or product developments that you’re excited about?
Bikinis are moving more toward the Brazilian cut which is nice.  Makes us ladies look even better. Manufacturers are starting to make woman’s board shorts in 4 way stretch like they do for the men which makes a huge difference when surfing.
