Windward Boardshop is fully stocked and ready to serve!
When and why did you start Windward Boardshop?
The store has been in Chicago since 1982. We all grew up in the Chicago area and have been coming to the store since we were kids. In September of 2010, two partners and I purchased the business from the original owner. Everyone wanted to see the store stay and not fall into the wrong hands. All three of us have a great passion for these sports and saw it as an amazing opportunity.
What is your favorite part of running Windward Boardshop?
One of the best parts is when the newbies come in. We get them into the right gear and give them all the pointers we can. It is great when we see them come back in and tell us how much fun they had with their new gear.
What non-profits do you support or work with?
Starting November 25th we started a promotion with Lakeview Pantry. They are a local food pantry that helps distribute food to homeless and low income people around the city. Their number is 773-525-1777 and can check out their site at www.lakeviewpantry.org. We have several other charities we are working with that will be announced soon. Giving back is a big part of what we think all companies should do.

What’s the local scene in Chicago, IL? Any spots worth mentioning?
Plenty of great local areas! If you are skating, head up to Wilson Skatepark. For SUP, Montrose Beach is great, and you can get a nice view of the city while paddling out on the lake. Being in the Midwest, we don’t have big mountains, but the local resorts do a great job of making park features. Chestnut and Devils Head are my two favorites.
Tell us about the best places to eat nearby.
Blokes and Birds is a new place that opened about the time we took over the store and the food is amazing. They have a great beer selection if you are looking to have a beverage. Thai Classic is another local favorite.
What’s the most exciting development in action sports in the past year–from your perspective?
The constant progression and innovation within each sport is very inspiring. The tricks just keep getting bigger and more technical. Developments in contests like the pool skating contest on the Dew Tour is fun to see.
Got to keep the valuables locked up…
Which athletes do you follow?
Travis Rice, John Jackson, Nicolas Muller, Terje, Chris Cole, Bob Burnquist, Chaz Ortiz and Rodney Mullen
Are there any upcoming competitions or events in your area that people should know about?
We do monthly events at our store. Recently had our winter kick-off party and will have more coming up. In February we have our post holiday party. This is also our 30th anniversary so we are kicking off a Year of Gear. Every month we will be featuring prizes that you can sign up for on our homepage or facebook. We are starting off with an Arbor Westmark board and a womens DC Ply board. New prizes will go up every month.
Any new products or product developments that you’re excited about?
Hybrid cambers that all the snowboard companies are making is a great development that has come out over the past couple years. It really is the best of both worlds and works well locally or on trips out west.
